New International Version (NIV)

The New International Version (NIV) was first conceptualized by engineer Howard Long in 1955 when he saw a need for an updated English translation.[1] Long brought the idea to the Christian Reformed Church (CRC) who formed a committee to consider this need in 1957.[2] Partnering with The National Association of Evangelicals (NAE), and others, a diverse group of biblical scholars came together in August of 1965 as a commission to address this work.[3] The work was finished in stages with the New Testament being complete in 1973 and the full Old and New Testaments of the NIV being first published in 1978.[4]
